Horror Editorial Review
**Editorial Review** "Twentieth Anniversary Screening" by Jeff Strand presents a striking homage to the slasher genre, particularly the infamous low-budget horror films of the 80s, while delivering a narrative that intertwines humor and suspense. The premise centers around a notorious slasher flick, "The Roofer," which had a disastrous screening when it became the backdrop for real-life horror, leading to a series of murders echoing the film's own plot. Fast forward twenty years, and the theater-owner's decision to run the film again ignites past horrors and sets the stage for mayhem. Strand’s writing captivates readers with its unique format, adopting the style of a lengthy article that effectively recounts the unfolding chaos. The characters are vividly described and elicit a spectrum of emotions, from the ambitious wannabe actor to the dislikeable director, enriching the story’s dynamics. The humor infused throughout balances the darker themes, rendering the read both entertaining and unsettling. Many reviewers appreciated Strand's ability to create engaging, engulfing narratives that make for a quick read, suitable for a single sitting. Although the book garnered praise for its plot and character development, some readers expressed dissatisfaction, feeling the execution fell short, particularly in establishing terror and tension, leading them to question the merits of its Bram Stoker Award. Thus, opinions are divided; while many celebrate its creativity and wit, others criticize its inability to fully deliver on its horror promise. Overall, "Twentieth Anniversary Screening" finds favor with horror enthusiasts looking for something fresh and humorous within a familiar genre, but it may leave traditionalists wanting more depth and fear. **
